The Open Letter
Prime Minister, you can’t protect our future while approving coal and gas
Young people have a right to a safe future. Governments have a responsibility to protect it.
Dear Prime Minister,
We’re young people who want to enjoy our lives and grow up looking forward to our futures.
Instead, we’re dealing with a cost-of-living crisis, hectic bushfires, floods and extreme heat.
We should be able to trust that our Government is looking out for us, and doing everything it can to protect our lives and futures.
Instead, you keep approving new coal and gas projects that make climate disasters worse.
Because you’re not listening to us, we turned to the United Nations.
Now, two UN Special Rapporteurs have raised issued serious allegations about Australia’s continued coal and gas expansion and its impacts on our human rights.
How can Australia claim climate leadership at global climate negotiations while continuing to make the climate crisis worse?
Prime Minister, we’re calling on your Government to:
- Stop approving new coal and gas projects and expansions.
- Immediately end subsidies to coal and gas corporations.
- Develop a national roadmap to phase out climate pollution in a way that’s fast and fair
Young people deserve to feel safe, have a say in decisions that shape our lives and look forward to our futures.
Prime Minister, protecting our future means its time to stop making the climate crisis worse.
Signed,
Generation Justice
