As young people, we are over it.

We’re over climate inaction. We’re over new fossil fuel projects being approved, and we’re over being ignored.

So, we’ve turned to the United Nations to hold the Australian government to account.

On behalf our group of nine young people from across Australia, Environmental Justice Australia has submitted a formal complaint to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Climate Change. We say that the Australian government’s lack of ambitious action on climate change is violating their human rights.

This UN complaint was prepared in the context of an uninspiring and unambitious Labor government.

But with an election now imminent and Dutton’s gas-fuelled disaster looming, the message has never been more urgent: climate inaction is violating human rights.

We are living the reality of a world in crisis.

We’re the generation that will face the full impact of the climate crisis – extreme heat, disasters, displacement, and economic turmoil.

But this isn’t a far-off future. It’s happening right now.

We hope that the UN will amplify our stories and push the Australian government to take responsibility for failing to protect young people’s human rights in the face of catastrophic climate change.

This is about justice. For us, for our communities, and for young people everywhere.
