My life is ruled by ice packs

Because of my disabilities, regulating my body temperature is not my strong suit (to put it mildly).

Even with an ice pack on my head, things you might take for granted – like getting out of bed, watering the garden or making a cup of tea are hard for me.

On hot days they’re impossible.

My name is Eliza, I am 21 years old. Together with eight other young people from across Australia I am making a complaint to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Climate Change. Because we’re over the Australian government’s lack of climate action.

Our stories are a wake-up call to what it’s like growing up in the age of “global boiling.”

We are living the reality of a world in crisis

We are the generation that will face the full force of the climate crisis – extreme heat, natural disasters, displacement, and economic turmoil.

But this isn’t a far-off future; it’s happening now.

We want the UN to back us up and urge the Australian government to take responsibility for failing to protect the human rights of young people – including our right to life, health, culture, and a safe future.

“I am at the front lines with my body…Right now, it’s not impacting the normal able-bodied person but it will happen eventually. It will happen to everyone.”
